What do students like about having a mentor?

Each year mentees complete a year-end survey about the experience of having a mentor. One question asks, "What do you like most about spending time with your mentor?"

Here are a few things students said in their 2011 survey:

I like when my mentor believes in me.

I like the fact that she makes me feel wanted. I feel like I have someone to talk to if my mom isn’t able to help me.

I get to breathe and just talk and get away from chaos at this school.

She is very understanding and very loving. She makes it easy to just be me.

She really helps me strive for my goals.

We are just like best friends.

I don’t really know, but I feel like I can talk to him without being judged.

I trust her and I can talk to her about anything.

I like spending time with my mentor because I know I can talk to her and trust her without being judged.

That I can turn to him with questions about subjects that my parents can’t help me with.

She always makes me happy when I’m feeling down. Also she’s the only person I could talk to without them judging me.

I like that she spends time with me and cares about me.

We have everything in common.

I have someone to talk to that can relate to my problems, but also help me with those problems.
